Venice Guide
Islands of the Venetian Lagoon
Venice & the Islands of the Lagoon Venice itself was built upon a series of islands, sand-banks and land reclaimed from the lagoon. Any sign of those original islands has long since been lost as the city continued to grow and develop as a sea of stone swept over her origins. But, the lagoon that surrounds Venice and the largest such natural lagoon in Italy is home to numerous islands that retain the history of Venice and its origins. Not far from the historical centre of Venice, a string of Islands are waiting to be discovered by the intrepid traveller. Each one has its own particular attraction, and in addition to the islands listed below there are many more uninhabited islands of the laggon that in previous lives were home to Villas, Monasteries and other settlements. In addition to the islands of the lagoon, the Venetian lagoon is also home to a wide variety of birdlife and many parts of the lagoon of Venice are actually sancturaies for wildlife protected from the abuse of man. The lagoon is sealed from the waters of the Adriatic Sea by a stretch of land that runs the full length of the Venetian lagoon. This stretch of land includes the famous Venetian Lido that is home to the Venice Film festival every September and Venice's most famous beach. Further along separated by a narrow stretch of water is Pellistrina where you'll find wild beaches that offer a more peaceful experience of the Adriatic and less expensive - cheaper restaurants and no tolls or fees to pay to use the beach.
