Tourist Information on Chioggia, Venice

Chioggia is the second most important city in the Venetian lagoon after Venice. It stands at the southern tip of the lagoon and in old days was the first line of defence against armies waging war against the Venetian republic. It's not really an island as it's connected to the mainland.

If it wasn't for the presence of industry mainly in the form of fishing, as nowadays, Chioggia is the main fishing port on the lagoon the surrounding low lying waters of the lagoon littered with fishermans houses standing on wooden stilts would give visitors an idea of how life started in the Lagoon for those early intrepid Venetians.

The town is located about a two-hour ride by boat from Venice . It does boast a few suggestive canals, but its crumbling buildings that lack the character of its more illustrious counterpart Venice make it a less chosen destination for tourists.

In fact, there is no reason to venture to Chioggia unless your looking for a complete change of pace from Venice . But, the ferry boat making its way to Chioggia does pause at both Pellestrina and Alberoni which offer fine beaches that are preferred by many to the main beach resort of Venice which is the Lido .
