On our small group Venice day tours of the Dolomite mountains enjoy a memorable day exploring what many people believe to be Europe's most beautiful range of mountains. During the day we make numerous stops at scenic viewpoints, walk around lakes, enjoy a Cortina city tour and walk on level terrain up in the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, from where you can enjoy a splendid view over this majestic mountain range.

From 15 November until the Tre Cime di Lavaredo re-opens ( generally the third week of May), this tour will visit San Candido and Lake Braies instead of Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Lake Misurina .

The beauty of the Dolomites is in their diversity. Throughout these excursions from Venice, we make frequent photo-stops; it will feel as if you have travelled from one mountain range to another such is the stark variation in scenery. During your Dolomites tour, you'll be able to see glaciers in the distance, soaring peaks, emerald green lakes surrounded by forests of pine and larch with reflections of the mountains mirrored on their calm waters, and typical Tyrolean villages clinging to the mountainsides.

At the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, at an altitude of 2,360m (7,500 ft), you'll enjoy a photo stop to enjoy one of the best views of the mountains, where you can gaze out across a myriad of peaks and valleys as far as the eye can see.

These excursions from Venice also include visiting the cosmopolitan Cortina where you will have the chance to walk around its delightful centre and peruse the many picturesque shops . And after a fulfilling day spent in the Dolomites, sit back and relax as we return to Venice through the ever-changing scenery of the mountains illuminated by the late afternoon sun.

WINTER / SPRING SEASON ITINERARY (from mid-November until the Tre Cime di Lavaredo re-opens ( generally the third week of May)

From November 15th until the Tre Cime di Lavaredo re-opens ( generally the third week of May) , join the Dolomites Day tour from Venice to visit Cortina, where you’ll have free time to walk around its busy city center and peruse the many shops of this famous Dolomites town.

Then we’ll make our way to the picturesque Braies Lake, known as “the Pearl among the Dolomites lakes”. It’s set in the beautiful Val Pusteria Valley and considered to be one of the most beautiful South Tyrolean lakes. Here, you’ll have the opportunity for an easy walk or to enjoy the beautiful view from one of the coffee shops by the lake while sipping a hot chocolate.

Next, we’ll head to San Candido, one of the most beautiful South Tyrolean villages in the Dolomites. The focus is on its pedestrian zone with its many colorful shops and the hustle and bustle of people. You can stroll around and taste local specialities like speck, local cheeses, the mouth-watering Canederli dumpling—a traditional first-course recipe handed down from one generation to another—and for the sweet tooth; the delicious Strudel cake.

I set out early with my two children and got to Tronchetto by 7.40am. We met the driver at the waterbus stop, he introduced himself as Nicolo and we waited there for the other passengers. After introductions (Irish, Chinese, U.S. and Saudi Arabia) we climbed into a black Mercedes minivan and got underway under ever-darkening skies. Nicolo was a fountain of information with broad knowledge of geography, geology, history, culture etc. I was very impressed with his ability to give an interesting running commentary on the way.

We stopped for a short toilet break at a motorway station and then, some time later, stopped in the picturesque town called Cortina d’Ampezzo. I was surprised at seeing Austrian Alpine architecture in Italy but later Nicolo told me that we were just 27km from the Austrian border. The attractive town was full of designer shops, hotels and art galleries. It was rather chilly and most of us ended up in the Café Royal for coffee, hot chocolate and pastries

After about an hour we got on the road again by which point the weather was pretty awful – heavy low cloud and rain. We drove on and ever upwards to a small lake at an altitude of 1846m called ‘Lago d’Antorno’. The lake is near Tre Cime di Lavaredo but, due to the weather conditions, it was not our day to view this natural wonder. Despite the weather we had a lovely walk around the lake and I got some fabulous photographs. This walk was the highlight of a week’s holiday in Venice for my two children.

After a time, we re-boarded the minivan and descended to Misurina Lake where we planned to have lunch and an optional walk around the lake. By the time we reached here it was raining heavily, everyone was hungry and nobody was up for a walk. Most of the group popped into “Pizzeria Edelweiss” for a ‘United Nations’ lunch. The lunch was really good, exceptional value and the staff were wonderfully friendly and the company was excellent.

After lunch we took a few photos and drove to the next town called Reane near Auronzo. The rain had stopped and the light had improved. Nicolo made a few unscheduled stops so we could take photos of Dolomites peeking above the mist and cloud. Our next stop was a picturesque turquoise lake called Lago di Santa Catrina. The lake is actually a reservoir behind a hydroelectric dam which Nicolo explained was built by Mussolini in the 1930s. Our final stop was in a village called Pieve di Cadore where we had a very welcome coffee and gelato. Then began the long drive back to Piazza Roma in Venice.

In summary, this was a very enjoyable trip for both my children and I. The people we met were very friendly. Niccolo was an extremely helpful and well-informed driver and guide who made the trip most enjoyable under challenging weather conditions. It was the highlight of my kids holiday and we all would love to do it again!

This trip was one of the highlights of my 3 weeks in Italy. Our guide Nicola was very experienced and informative, as well as being lots of fun. He anticipated all our needs including frequent photo opportunities, comfort stops and meal breaks. He was punctual and very flexible with the schedule. The scenery was magnificent the whole way to the Dolomites and having great weather we were able to witness their splendour.

The scenery was awesome and we had enough time at each stop to enjoy it. The 8th person in the group sits on the hump in the front seat with the dashboard sticking out, so it was a little cramped for the long ride.

Our group had a quick trip from Venice to the mountains. Our guide, Francesco, was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of great Italian insight with our group. Our photos are all fantastic. The opportunity to see the Dolomites was very enriching and rewarding

We took a tour up to the Dolomites and we absolutely loved it! Marco was our driver and tour guide and honestly if I could have had him as my tour guide for my entire 18 day trip I would have. He was so wonderful to learn from and engaging.

It was snowing the day we took our tour. Unfortunately we did not see what we came for, but our guide kept us positive and found other things to show us during our trip. Next time, I will be sure to use Avventure Bellissime for my 2nd try to see the Dolomite Mountains!

We were given enough time at each stop to enjoy the sights. Francisco was as flexible as the time permitted, within the time restraints.

Service provided was very good. My only constructive criticism would be that the driver have a microphone so that passengers in the back seat can hear the commentary. Vehicle was clean and comfortable and the driver/guide was friendly, professional and had good knowledge of the area

Very impersonable and didn’t get the full tour as described and seen in pictures.

Not a good tour in the winter. The lakes that are visited are frozen over and completely covered in snow (you can't even tell that they're lakes). Depending on the weather, the mountains may be hidden in cloud cover as well. Other stops, like the ones to Cortina and San Candido, were relatively short and uninteresting.
