Tour Overview Tour Overview

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born at Arezzo in 1475. But, it was in Florence where his great talents were first discovered. On our Michelangelo guided walking tours of Florence with expert Florence tour guides we'll reveal the genius of Michelangelo by tracing his time in Florence during the Renaissance through his works as well as discussing the life & times of the great Renaissance artist. His temperamental personality, the rivalries that existed between Michelangelo and other great artists of the Renaissance movement, and in-depth explanations of the great works by Michelangelo that you'll see on this tour.

These private Florence walking tours start from the Bargello sculpture museum, housed within the fortress whose courtyard often served as a place of execution, whose walls are studded with stemmae of its resident governors and emblems of the city wards echo the Medieval history of Florence. We will visit this beautifully proportioned gallery to admire works by the great master.

We'll see the astonishing statue of Bacchus done when Michelangelo was only 21 years old, the beautiful marble relief of the Madonna and child, called the tondo Pitti, completed while working on the collossal statue of David. We'll continue through time to see his statue of Apollo, and his bust of Brutus.

Following the Bargello, we'll walk down via Proconsolo, around the apse of the duomo, down the beautiful via dei Servi to the Accademia gallery. Having made reservations in advance we'll enter the Accademia without having to stand-in-line you'll walk straight into the Accademia Museum for one of the highlights of our Michelangelo Florence walking tours.

After enjoying an in-depth discussion of David, we'll also have time to admire "Michelangelo's Slaves". A series of breath-taking sculptures of original captives of the stone who writhe, struggle and turn, forever attempting to free themselves from their rigid marble blocks. The Slaves were originally commissioned by pope Julius II for his own personal tomb in Rome. Through the full narration of this tour by one of our local expert guides you will learn how this genius born in the late 1400's sculpted his ideas in ways that influenced artists for centuries to come.

Our Michelangelo walking tours of Florence finishes inside the Accademia Gallery where you'll be able to admire other important works of art housed in the museum, and perhaps, take some time to reflect on an intense and thoroughly entertaining tour of Florence and the times of the Renaissance.
