A popular alternative to the above itinerary would be to enjoy a hike from Corniglia to Manarola via Volastra for a beautiful trekking among the vineyards ,with an optional wine tasting in a local winery in Volastra. This hike is more difficult than the one suggested with an elevation gain of 1300 ft (400 meters) and a flight of steps (1200) at the start of the walk. While walking along this admirable trail, you will see the farmers looking after olive and grape trees on the dry land of Manarola and Corniglia. 2000 years ago, Volastra was called Vicus Oleaster that meant "the village of olive grove".

After the hike you would enjoy free time for lunch and / or wonder around the tiny village of Manarola.
