Dominated by the façade of San Giorgio Maggiore, arguably Palladio's most beautiful creation in Venice . Palladio's creation enjoys one of the most prominent positions in Venice and it had a significant influence on Renaissance architecture. Built between 1565 and 1580, the façade when viewed from the neighboring St Marks creates a three-dimensional play through the synergy of Palladio's architecture. Inside the church boasts the treasures of works by Tintoretto, as well as an elevator to the to top of the 60 metre high bell tower from which the views of Venice are unsurpassed. The church is open daily from 9 am until 1 pm , and from 2 pm until 6 pm ( in the wineter months until 5 pm ). Originally, the island was settled by monks who created an abbey on the island that became a hone for retiring Doge's. The Island can be reached by # 82 water-bus from San Zaccaria near St Marks. |
