Tour Overview Tour Overview

On our Private walking tours of Bologna, Italy, a mecca for food lovers, with a Licensed Expert Bologna Tour Guide discover its many diverse attractions as you tour a city that's off the main tourist route. Bologna historic centre, Europe's second largest, after Venice, contains a wealth of important Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The roman heritage is still present in the lay out of the city, with its main streets following the grid pattern of the roman settlement.

Our 2,5-hour walking tours of the historic centre of Bologna, start in Piazza Malpighi, where one can admire the exterior of the Gothic church of S. Francesco and the medieval tombs of Bologna's University law scholars; walking along picturesque arcaded streets one will reach the two adjoining squares at the heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno, the latter named after the famous Neptune's fountain (1566).

These two squares form a harmonious ensemble framed by fine Medieval and Renaissance palaces Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall); Palazzo dei Notari (Old College of Notaries); Palazzo del Podest (Governor's Palace); and Palazzo di Re Enzo, named after King Enzo (son of the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia) who was confined there for 22 years.

One side of Piazza Maggiore is dominated by the imposing Basilica of S. Petronio (1390), one of the finest examples of Gothic brickwork in Italy. Strolling down the arcaded street along the left flank of S. Petronio, lined with elegant shops, one arrives at the Archiginnasio, former home of the University which features an ornate Anatomical Theatre (closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday all day).

A few steps away is the liveliest corner of old Bologna, a little market district full of fancy food shops, bakeries, fruit and vegetable stalls. Walking down the alleys of the old market one gets to the complex of Santo Stefano, a group of small Romanesque churches important to pilgrims in the Middle Ages. The tour ends at the foot of the two Leaning Towers, the landmark of the city.

Over the centuries Bologna has acquired many nicknames: "the learned one (La Dotta) is a reference to its famous university, the oldest existing university in Europe; the Fat One (La Grassa) refers to its cuisine, while the Red (La Rossa) that refers to the colour of its roofs in the city centre. Capital of Italy for good cuisine, it has given its name to the world famous Ragu' alla Bolognese and is also where Lasagne and Tortellini were first made.
